Bird de la Coeur Architects
Vanessa is an Architect and co-founded of Bird de la Coeur Architects. The studio specialises in housing, including multi-residential housing, Aged Care and social housing for government and community housing providers.
After more than 20 years in practice, their work has been widely published and received numerous industry awards, including the Dulux Colour Awards Grand Prix for the Atherton Garden Social Housing in Fitzroy. Vanessa has a strong interest in experimental housing models producing major projects such as Atherton Gardens, Roi, adaptive housing such as Wedmore House and multigenerational housing like Mt Eliza House, awarded the Victorian Coastal Award for Excellence, the State Government's Highest Award. She is a skilled negotiator, able to interpret the often disparate requirements of client groups, time frames and construction techniques to produce highly crafted outcomes on site.
Vanessa is a Nationally Elected Councilor and Director of the Australian Institute of Architects. She is the immediate past AIA Victorian Chapter President, and a member of their Honours Committee. She has represented the Institute on Course Accreditation Panels for the University of Melbourne and Deacon University.
Vanessa is on the Board of Architecture Media, a a multi-platform publisher and events organization, and is a member of the Boyd Circle.
Vanessa co-edited ‘The Culture of Landscape Architecture’ with Harriet Edquist, and has designed several other publications including the award winning ‘Transition Special Issue Robin Boyd’, 1992, ed Helen Stuckey, and ‘Frederick Romberg: The Architecture of Migration 1938-1975’.
She was an RAIA Chapter Councillor from 2001- 2007 and was made a Fellow in 2008.
