Anne Hindley

Director & Principal Architect
Hindley & Co

My background in philosophy informs my humanistic and sensory approach to architecture. I’m fascinated with form, flow and layering which, experienced together in the right way, can be enough to send shivers down the spine. My work aims to create arresting rushes of pleasure and moments of intensity of feeling.

We use framing to curate what is revealed and concealed, and experiment with the palette we have available as designers – light, darkness, air, water, reflection, texture, pattern, greenery, sky – to create sensory resonance that stirs the unconscious.

I would like to share why I believe this is important to architecture, and our clients, and how this plays out in our practice through teaching, writing or contributing to juries.

I spent over 20 years working for acclaimed international and local architects before establishing my Melbourne-based architecture and interior design practice, Hindley & Co, in 2012.

I began my career in New York, working with Smith-Miller & Hawkinson (on the design team for the award-winning Corning Museum of Glass), SITE, and Italian architect Gaetano Pesce. I then worked at Daryl Jackson (Australia) and Bligh Voller Nield for Etihad Stadium, before returning overseas to work on the £9bn landmark Battersea Power Station redevelopment, an Austrian ski/spa resort, and a medium density apartment complex with French studio, MAX Architectes. Back home, I worked with Allan Powell for six years as senior architect where I was the project architect for award-winning projects Bundoora West Lecture Theatre, and the heritage-listed Anchorage, in Sorrento.

My studio of seven is in West Melbourne.

Qualifications:
Bachelor of Architecture (Honours), RMIT University
Bachelor of Arts (Philosophy), University of Melbourne
Registered Architect, Architects Registration Board of Victoria
Registered Architect, Board of Architects of Tasmania
Accredited Designer, Design Institute of Australia
