Graduate of Architecture
Hames Sharley

My interest in architecture was ignited by Grand Designs and The Sims.

Throughout my studies I was most excited when in the residential realm and craved in depth structural knowledge. So, when I landed my first job at an architecture & construction firm (Contech 2018 – 2021) it was the perfect place to start my career. Working for a builder gave me great site exposure and is where my passion for documentation was born.

Now, working for Hames Sharley I’m able to expand on my industry experience and apply my skillset to the high rise residential & commercial sector.

Having graduated from UniSA in 2018, I’m navigating my way through the early stages of my career and developed an interest in how our leaders in practice and university gained their knowledge and experience. This led to the creation of ‘The Designer Journals’ podcast where I chat to people who share stories about architecture and life. Having faced many struggles throughout my studies and transitioning from school to practice, I wanted to share my story in hopes that it would help others and provide some laughs along the way. To my surprise, I learnt many around me had similar experiences and I was able to have some meaningful conversations about mental health, overcoming challenges in practice as fresh grads, balancing personal and work life and how it was making us feel.

Beyond the studio, I am a participant of the Property Council of Australia, 500 Women in Property for 2022. I then joined the Australian Institute of Architects: National Committee for Gender Equity in June 2022.

Through these avenues I’m able to connect and share experiences with my peers about meaningful topics relating to the industry and women. I believe a better understanding of those around us contributes to good work culture which enables us to succeed in our jobs.
